Planning a Restorative Day in Jaipur

Jaipur rewards the ambitious visitor. There is a great deal to see, most of it worth seeing, and it is entirely possible to spend a day moving between forts and markets from morning until night and arrive back at your room genuinely exhausted.

This is a different kind of day. The organising principle is that you should end it more rested than you began, which sounds obvious and is surprisingly rarely achieved.

Start late, deliberately

Not at dawn. A restorative day that begins with an alarm has already given away its main advantage. Wake without one, eat properly and unhurriedly, and let the morning be genuinely slow.

If you want to see something, choose one thing, and choose it near where you are staying. One courtyard walked through slowly is a better memory than three visited efficiently.

Put the treatment in the middle

Late morning or early afternoon is the ideal slot for a massage on a day like this. Early enough that you are not counting down to it all day; late enough that you have properly woken up. If you are deciding between treatments, our therapy menu sets out what each one involves.

It also means the hours afterwards are yours in the state the treatment leaves you in, rather than being spent asleep. A massage at nine in the evening is a fine thing, but it makes the rest of the day the main event, which is the opposite of the intention here.

Eat lightly before, properly after

Something small an hour or two before. A large meal before a massage is uncomfortable, and an empty stomach makes it harder to settle.

Afterwards, eat well and drink water. Most people are hungrier than they expect after a treatment.

Protect the hour after

This is the part people skip, and it is the part that determines whether the day works. Do not schedule anything for the hour after your treatment. No meeting, no market, no drive across the city.

Sit somewhere quiet. Walk slowly. The relaxation of a good massage deepens for a while after it ends, and going straight into traffic discards most of it.

The evening

Keep it small. Somewhere calm to eat, an early night, and nothing that requires negotiating a crowd. If you have a full day of sightseeing planned, put it tomorrow — you will do it better rested.

If you are visiting rather than living here

The best day for this is the one after you arrive, or the day before you leave. Arrival day, because travel is more tiring than it feels at the time, and starting a trip already depleted shapes the whole of it. Departure eve, because most people spend their last day rushing and regret it.

Book before you travel rather than hoping for a slot on the day — our number and directions are all you need to arrange it. A day built this way is not a day off from Jaipur. It is the one that leaves you able to enjoy the rest of it.
